Young Women in Leadership Program Looking for Hosts

March 7, 2017: Young Women in Leadership Program Looking for Hosts

Burlington Economic Development Corporation (BEDC) is excited to announce a pilot program by Member of Parliament for Oakville North-Burlington Pam Damoff. Launching May 8th, the Young Women in Leadership program will offer young women an opportunity to job-shadow in a local business, agency, organization, or government. The Young Women in Leadership program is seeking organizations to host these young women.

The need for this initiative came out of a roundtable on women’s empowerment Damoff hosted last year on International Women’s Day. This program highlights the importance of investing in young Canadians to build a stronger future and to help them obtain the skills and experience they need to contribute to our economic growth.

Work experiences are a critical component of preparing youth for transition to adulthood. The goals of Young Women in Leadership are to support young women in: developing an understanding of different occupations in order to make informed career choices, increasing knowledge of specific occupational skills and workplace settings, gaining career readiness skills including the “soft skills” that employers look for in entry level workers, and building confidence in professional environments.

This program will take place during the week of May 22-26, 2017. The youth participants will be paired with an organization that relates to their career interests and aspirations. The placements can be full-day or half-day, and can be designed however the host thinks will create the most engaging experience for the youth.

To participate as a mentor or for more information, please contact Josh Regnier by email at pam.damoff@parl.gc.ca or by phone at 905-847-4043 Applications close on March 31st.
