Canada’s Strategic Response

  • Canada has announced a 25% counter-tariff on up to $155 billion in U.S. goods to offset the economic impact of new tariffs.
  • The federal government is also considering additional trade and non-tariff measures to manage evolving policies and mitigate disruptions.

Burlington’s Action Plan

Recognizing the challenges posed by the latest tariffs, Burlington is taking proactive steps to prioritize Canadian businesses and suppliers by:

  • Supporting Local Businesses – Limiting contracts and purchases to Canadian-only companies.
  • Adjusting Procurement – Pausing procurement where necessary to align with the Buy Canadian approach.
  • Restricting Spending – Ensuring all new goods and services come from domestic suppliers.
  • Travel Restrictions – Halting non-essential U.S. travel, except for advocacy efforts.
  • Financial Planning – Assessing the costs and funding sources for these measures.

Mayor’s Tariff Task Force

To further address the situation, Mayor Marianne Meed Ward has established the Mayor’s Tariff Task Force. This task force is dedicated to:

  • Advocacy: Collaborating with provincial and federal governments to represent Burlington’s interests and seek relief measures for affected industries.
  • Support Programs: Developing and promoting resources to assist local businesses in navigating the challenges posed by the tariffs.
  • Community Engagement: Encouraging residents to support local enterprises through initiatives like the “Buy Canadian” campaign.
