Canada Summer Jobs program meeting at Burlington Central Library
The Government of Canada has extended the deadline of the Canada Summer Jobs program to March 11.
Funding for the program is also doubling to $220 million annually for the next three years.
The new funding will help expand the number of youths who can be hired from more than 34,000 in 2015 to up to 70,000 this summer.
Canada Summer Jobs has helped provide more than 330,000 student jobs since its inception.
A summer jobs information session for local not-for-profit, public sector and small businesses with 50 or fewer employees will be held on Tuesday, March 1, from 5-7 p.m., at Burlington Central Library, 2331 New St.
Not-for-profit employers that participate in the program can receive up to 100 percent of the provincial/territorial minimum hourly wage and mandatory employment-related costs.
Public sector employers and small businesses with 50 or fewer employees can receive up to 50 percent of the provincial/territorial minimum hourly wage.
The youth unemployment rate exceeds 13 percent, more than double the unemployment rate (six percent) for those aged 25 and older.
For those aged 15-24 and returning to school, summer unemployment was more than 16 percent in the summer of 2015.
