Small Business Week: Meet the Faces Behind Burlington’s Local Treasures

It’s Small Business Week, and there’s no better time to celebrate the heart of Burlington’s economy; the entrepreneurs whose passion, creativity, and resilience make our city such a vibrant place to live, work, and visit.

Burlington’s small businesses are proof that when people follow their passion, the entire community benefits. Each one contributes something special; strengthening our economy, shaping our neighbourhoods, and adding to the vibrant lifestyle that makes Burlington such a great place to live, work, and visit.

Today, we’re spotlighting three inspiring Burlington-made businesses whose stories show how entrepreneurship, innovation, and community thrive right here at home.

Familia Fine Foods: A Taste of Heritage, A Community of Heart

When Juliana and Luis opened Familia Fine Foods in 2016, their goal went far beyond serving great meals; they wanted to share the warmth of their Latin American heritage and the joy of family connection.

Nearly a decade later, their family-run kitchen has become a Burlington favourite, known for its delicious ready-to-eat meals and heartfelt hospitality. Every dish is crafted from generations-old recipes, bringing people together around food made with love.

Juliana and Luis say that Burlington’s supportive business community has been key to their journey. It’s a reminder that thriving local businesses are built on strong community roots, and Burlington’s entrepreneurial ecosystem provides exactly that.

Simply Gifted: Where Creativity and Community Meet

Great small businesses don’t just sell products; they create connections. That’s exactly what Simply Gifted has been doing since opening its doors in December 2022.

Founder Courtney Maren started Simply Gifted with a simple idea: to bring back the heart of gift-giving. What began as a passion project has grown into one of Burlington’s most charming boutiques, known for its locally made and Canadian-crafted treasures paired with genuine customer care.

Simply Gifted is a proud reflection of Burlington’s creative spirit; where entrepreneurship is rooted in collaboration, innovation, and community pride. In a city where small businesses are supported by local networks and programs, dreams can grow into thriving storefronts that make everyday moments a little more meaningful.

Blue Dot Acres: Growing Connection, Cultivating Calm

For Erin Fleming, founder of Blue Dot Acres, business growth begins with connection to people, to place, and to purpose.

Since opening in 2022, her suburban farm, just minutes from Burlington City Hall, has blossomed into a model for experiential agritourism. From bunny yoga to firefly walks and intimate seasonal celebrations, Blue Dot Acres invites guests to slow down and reconnect with nature.

When asked why Burlington was the perfect home for her business, Erin says it’s the blend of city energy and country charm. With easy access by highways and GO Transit, Burlington is simple to reach; but, as she puts it, “it’s the leaving that’s hard to do.”
