BEDC ANNUAL REPORT 2016
(May 2, 2017) BURLINGTON ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT CORPORATION (BEDC) RELEASES 2016 ANNUAL REPORT, HIGHLIGHTING KEY ACTIVITIES, OBJECTIVES AND ECONOMIC SNAPSHOT OF BURLINGTON.
In 2016 BEDC refocused on meeting the objectives set out in Burlington’s Economic Vision and the City of Burlington Strategic Plan. BEDC delivered strong results, such as the development of an innovation and entrepreneurship strategy that has led to the launch of a new innovation centre, opening June 2017. BEDC also focused on building Burlington’s a strong international brand through hosting multiple delegations with over 500 attendees, and supported the development of a new Official Plan that meets the employment needs of the future.
Currently ranked number one in the Halton Region for jobs-to-population ratio at .6%, Burlington continues to have a strong and diverse economy. Burlington welcomed 425 new businesses to the community last year, and directly supported 117 companies looking to expand, start-up or locate in Burlington.
According to BEDC’s Executive Director Frank McKeown, “The City of Burlington Strategic Plan positions Burlington as a City that Grows. During 2016 BEDC focused on growing the Burlington economy through job growth, redevelopment and a focus on innovation and entrepreneurship.” McKeown went on to explain that, “BEDC takes a data and stakeholder driven approach to setting strategic priorities and annual tactics. Our Data Centre is just one way we achieved this in 2016.”
Updated quarterly, BEDC’s new Data Centre is home to an extensive index of Burlington economic data including business costs, competitiveness, demographics and other insights important for helping businesses expand, start-up and locate in Burlington.
